Challenge #9
Rec Us Your Newest Thing.

Usually around this time of year I end up sinking a lot of time into a city-builder or Civilization-type video game. I just get sucked in and spend hours upon hours, and I feel pretty bad about it, because I'm not really using my brain in any puzzling capacity (even though I think I am.) And there's no like, story or anything that makes me feel like I had a transformative experience.

This year though, I heard about a game called One Hour One Life, and that ended up being my Thing in January.

I clocked over 60 hours in three weeks, because I can never do portion control on basically anything, ever. It's a civilization/city builder game but with a big social element. You get born as a baby to another player, and only live for an hour. Each minute is a year, and you automatically die at 60 of old age. (You can also die before then of starvation, infections, etc.) So you have to work with other players to get the community up and running and keep it alive.

It's SO FUCKING FUN.

Expandme rambling about this game lol )

My favourite baby names to use:

GIRLS:
Saga, Sigyn, Apollonia, Delphina, Bronwyn (If there's already a Benton), Hope (when there's a population bottleneck), Evelyn (when there's a population bottleneck), Lillith (If there's already an Adam)
I tried to use Sif, but it also autocorrects it to Sifa, which I don't like as much.

BOYS:
Benton, Bronson (If there's already a Benton), Sagan (If there's already a Saga), Holden, Apollo, Adam (when there's a population bottleneck), Seth (If there's already an Adam)

MAN! I really love this game! It's starting to get to the point now where it's ONLY fun if there's people willing to commit to the role play, and it's tedious to try and hope for the best. I hope that when I revisit it months or years from now, there's still enough people on the server.

The game was entirely programmed and developed by ONE PERSON, so for his sake, too, I hope it keeps attracting new players. It only cost $20ish, there's no ongoing fees or anything, so he would need new players to keep joining to be able to keep running it.

Challenge #6

In your own space, share a favourite piece of original canon (a show, a specific TV episode, a storyline, a book or series, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

This is an iconic moment from my bulletproof fandom, Ace Attorney. I kind of want to just post it without context, but the challenge is to explain why you love it so much, lol. I basically have to give the "quick version" of the story behind this quote. Good thing I love rambling about AA!

IN OTHER NEWS, today was More Joy Day, something I learned from [personal profile] ride_4ever. To spread joy in fandom, I went through my bookmarks and left kudos and comments for fics I hadn't done that for yet. I'm also going through the ones I have downloaded on my kindle. Some people are going to get digest emails full of kudos from me, lol.

Mostly the comments I'm leaving are not as robust as I wanted to leave, which is why I hadn't left a comment already. I figured ANY comment is better than NO comment, so I took advantage of the day to catch up.

Challenge #3

Create a wish list of fandom things (podfic, graphics, playlists, canon recs translations, research help, vids, sky's the limit!) that you'd like to receive.

I really miss kinkmemes! Last year I discovered the Due South / Canadian 6 Degrees Prompt Meme on AO3-- I didn't even know AO3 HAD prompt memes before that. So my wish list is any of the prompts I left there, which are the six most recent ones, and the only ones from this decade, lol. Some are silly so I'll put the two ones I want the most here:

Challenge #4

IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself.

Hello, I'm VivaRocksteady! I have been in fandom for over twenty years, so we may have crossed paths in the LiveJournal days when I was under a different name (it was very close to my IRL name, because I was young and foolish!) My most active fandoms back then were Andromeda, various small film fandoms, and Star Trek 2009.

I write fanfic and consume fanfic and fanart. I'm on tumblr, discord, and pillowfort (although I've sort of abandoned pillowfort, it wasn't really delivering on what it promised.) I'm looking for communities with conversation!

If I'm "known" for anything in fandom, it's for these fics:
- The Truman Show AU in Ace Attorney (Edgeworth/Phoenix, depressed and gaslit Edgeworth)
- The Nurse!Phoenix AU in Ace Attorney (Edgeworth/Phoenix, suicidal Edgeworth)
- The foster kid!Holden AU in Mindhunter (gen, Bill & Holden father-son focus)
- The Jake was adopted by Holt and Kevin AU series in Brooklyn 99. (gen, Holt & Jake father-son focus)

Sensing any themes yet, lol?

Challenge #5

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture (a link to a picture will be fine!) or description of something that is or represents:
6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood

I'm interpreting this kind of loosely and posting some moodboard-type images I made for Due South characters. And two OCs (in the Due South universe), it would be interesting to see if anyone picks up any impressions of them from the pics.

Challenge #2 - fandom goals.

1) Finish my due South/Spartacus fusion fic as soon as I can. This month, if I don't dither around too much!

2) After that, I have a lot of non-fandom writing goals, but if/when time allows, I really want to pick up my Mindhunter mini-Holden foster kid fic again! It's been four years since I wrote the first story in the series-- of course it wasn't SUPPOSED to be a series, and that first story wasn't SUPPOSED to end up being 150k words! It was the first proper mystery story I've written, definitely the longest story I've written, and the fact that I finished it at all is pretty impressive. But I would really like to complete the saga, even if the fandom has shrunk a lot thanks to Netflix axing the show.

I don't think it's realistic to plan to finish it in 2024, unless I get so hyper-fixated on it I prioritize it over my non-fandom writing-- which, THAT part is realistic, I just hope I don't do that, lol. But getting any kind of chunk on it done and posted would be REALLY nice!

I have other, smaller fic ideas that have been waiting on the backburner for ages that I also still really want to write, but foster kid!Holden is the big one. Also, most of those other ideas are for Ace Attorney fandom, and let's be real, that's my bulletproof fandom. I'm not currently "in" it, but one day I will be again. So why stress those ideas when its inevitable it'll come around and be my main squeeze again one day?

As seen on [personal profile] impala_chick's journal: Give us the links to your fics with the most hits, most kudos, most comments, most bookmarks, most words, and least words.

- Most Hits: Influence
Brooklyn 99 gen AU fic, Ray and Kevin adopt Jake as a baby.
The first of a short series. I have lots of other adopted-Jake stories to write but I'll probably never get around to them. By far the fluffiest thing I've ever written.

- Most Kudos: Influence again

- Most comments: Who Composed Your Beauties
Mindhunter case/gen AU fic. Bill and Nancy Tench take in 16-year-old Holden Ford as a foster kid at the same time they adopt Brian.
I'm sensing a trend! You spend your whole life thinking fanfic is about shipping and sex, but it turns out what people REALLY like is surrogate dads and kid-fic, even when mixed with a slow burn murder mystery.

- Most words: Who Composed Your Beauties
At 148,468 words, it's by far the longest fic I've ever finished. But guess what-- it's fucking NOT finished, there's supposed to be a part two. The pandemic kind of fucked my writing up there for a while!

These two adopted-kid fics have the most hits and comments, but they couldn't be more different than each other.

- Most bookmarks: Begone Dull Care
Ace Attorney, Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright AU
The "nurse Phoenix" AU where they meet in the ER
after Edgeworth tries to kill himself.
I really love AUs lol.
A surprising amount of people comment that this fic is thoughtful or realistic, but honestly I don't think it is? When I wrote it, it was pure self-indulgent suffer porn, to be completely honest!

- Least Words: The Same Old Skinny Kids from High School
1589 words
Scott Pilgrim, gen, Knives battles Nega-Knives.
This was for a comment-fic-a-thon on LJ back in the day. I actually wrote it all by hand one day at work during my "morning pages," where I try to free write for 20 minutes or so.
I thought I'd have to use one of my abandoned WIPs for this, since I'm such an over-writer, so I was surprised to find that my shortest work was actually complete. I should write by hand more often.

Day 9: Who, from any of your fandoms, would you like to pluck out of their fiction-based universe and drop into this universe, in a role such as an elected official or the like?

Even tie between Benton Fraser from due South and the equally-as-good-and-pure Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney. Phoenix has the slight edge just for not being a cop. As the name of his franchise implies, he's a defence attorney, while Fraser is your definition of a by-the-books police officer (RCMP, in case you're not familiar.)

Expandmore on these two... )

Well, this answer kind of went off the rails. I just really like talking about these guys!
(Also many of the Starfleet officers would work, but I guess that goes without saying.)

Day 10: Reserved for one or two questions (and either/or choice) from Day 3!  EDIT: The questions are now posted -
you can find them by clicking here.
Gonna answer a few:

(
[personal profile] elderwitty )Who was the worst-cast actor in a show or movie? (Not necessarily a bad actor - just wrong for the role.). Bonus: Who should have been cast instead?

The one big "wtf" casting for me was Woody Harrelson as whats-his-name in the Hunger Games. It's not that he did a bad job, and I REALLY like Woody Harrelson generally. But when I read the book, I immediately thought of Zach Galifianakas as that character. Especially since he was described as being overweight (and this was before Zach lost a ton of weight,) and I think the first thing he does is drunkenly vomit and fall out of his chair? He starts out comedic and gets tragic real fast, and I always thought Zach was capable of that, but I'm still sort of waiting for it to happen.

Woody is skinny, and he did a fine job but yeah. #notmy whatever that guy's name was.

([personal profile] kate )The weirdest crossover/fusion you can think of from your first and most recent fandoms?

For my latest fandom, it's the due South/Spartacus fusion I'm writing that I mentioned before.

The earliest one I can remember is actually how I discovered Ace Attorney. I was hanging out a lot on the kinkmeme for the 2009 Star Trek movie. Unbeknownest to me, the Ace Attorney kinkmeme at that point was the biggest on the net...
 (and it's STILL ACTIVE!)

The ST kinkmeme overtook the AA kinkmeme for a time, and when that happened somebody prompted a crossover. The resulting comment fic was literally the characters from AA talking about how they were jealous of the characters in Star Trek, and it featured Klavier Gavin being threatened by Pavel Chekov's cute curly hair.

I was like "what the hell is this" and went to check it out, thought I'd pick up the first game, and then became utterly and truly obsessed. Now Ace Attorney is one of my bullet-proof fandoms that I have still not lost interest in. Every couple of years I fall back into it, and since it's always active, there's always new fic to discover! At this point there's probably more AA fic than a person could read in a lifetime.

But yes, it was a truly weird crossover.

(My own question) What fanfic trope do you think deserves way more love than it gets?

BDSM-verse AUs! Nobody writes them anymore. (Crying forever)

vivarocksteady: (avatar)
Day 6: Who was the first hero you wanted to be saved by? And from what would you need rescuing?
Bonus: Who's a hero you could save?

I put this question off because I actually have no answer. Partially because my memory of my childhood is so poor, but I also don't think I thought about stories that way. I imagined myself as the hero a lot. It went so far that sometimes watching movies, I'd just pretend the hero was a woman so I could be the hero.

I guess what I wanted to be rescued from was being overlooked and forgotten, and imagining I was the hero was the way to do that. By the time I got into writing fanfic, though, I wasn't writing self-insert type stuff anymore. Fanfic was more about torturing boys and watching them get plowed than anything else!

Day 7: Who was the first villain you admired, even if only a little? Why?

I'm not quite sure about admiring any of them tbh. I remember enjoying Ursula from the Little Mermaid a lot. The villains from most of those 90s Disney movies were pretty enjoyable, but Ursula definitely stood out. I do remember realizing that she used to be the ruler of the ocean before Triton and being like "Yeah, that's not fair! How come she can't be queen??"

I think Star Trek: Deep Space 9 was the first time I had morally grey or questionable faves. I mean, I was too young to understand what the fuck was going on in that show, but I really liked Garak, and I knew he was bad, only he wasn't, or maybe it was complicated??
Star Trek in general was good at presenting lots of antagonists that way, but Garak was the first one I really cared about.

Day 8: Tell me something about the last fandom thing you wrote. Or the last thing you read. Or the last thing you recced. Or all of them.

I've been writing a very bizarre and unexpected crossover fic of Due South with Spartacus. As usual with my dumb AUs, it was supposed to be short and sweet, but it's spun wildly out of control! I am in the home stretch though, no beginning of an unexpectedly sprawling epic that that I
 never finish this time!

Speaking of which, though, the last fandom thing I wrote before that was the start of my foster kid Holden Ford sequel, for Mindhunter fandom, and I posted that-- a year ago?? Holy hell. I really, really want to finish that this year. That was another fic that was supposed to be just a short one-shot, ended up being over 100,000 words of actual mystery (when I've never written a mystery before) and then I sort of shunted over all the big emotional questions to a sequel. And then I got super busy and distracted. Why can't life just be fanfic??

For recs, I was chatting with a Mindhunter fandom friend about that old show Andromeda, and we ended up talking about Holden as a ship's avatar. She wrote a fic of it and I am OBSESSED!!! I want her to write more, but there's only so much nagging you can do, especially for something so niche, lol.

The last thing I bookmarked was in Spartacus fandom, an Agron/Nasir fic called Payment For Their Offensive Births. I have read some of this author's other fics, but this one really stood out to me.

In canon, Agron and Nasir sort of fall in love off-screen-- you can see the chemistry when they meet, but after a few events, they're just sort of suddenly a couple. The show has too many couples to juggle to give everybody a slow burn romance, of course-- there's a LOT of love at first sight going on, so I can't criticize it for that. But this fic does a really good job of showing Agron's perspective on Nasir changing as they work together.

It's also suuuuper angsty and tragic, as every Spartacus fic should be IMO. That whole show is just one big exercise in pointless sadness and I, for one, love every minute of it.

Trying out [personal profile] squidgiepdx's June Something posting challenge!

Day 4: What's your most treasured piece of fandom march?

I actually don't have much, if any, fandom merch. Unless you count DVDs, of which I only have a few. The only really fandomy thing I
actually own is the Avatar The Last Airbender art book that I bought for myself.

Reading some other people's responses, it also made me realize that everything I do "own" isn't physical. Besides a very few DVDs, CDs, and records, everything I watch or listen to is digital. Even most (non-fanfic) books I read these days are in the form of ebooks, either bought or borrowed on an e-reader app, except for books people gift me.

I'm not a collector of anything, so I wouldn't have had a lot of fandom merch anyway, but it's sort of weird how I have nothing physical. It makes it easy to forget about things. Like, I do have this one CD from a Japanese rock band I randomly saw years ago, and when I come across it I remember that night and that show, even though I never actually listen to the CD. But at the same time, I've probably come across dozens of acts online and really liked them, but didn't listen to them enough for various algorithms to remember, so now they're just... gone.

Which I suppose is actually an authentic way to engage with art, now that I think about it.

Day 5: If you could go back in time and help create a foundational work (be it book, show, movie, etc.) what would it be and what would your role be?

I've been asked a variation of this question before, about which writers room of a classic (to you) show would you go back in time and work on? And my answer was The X-Files and Star Trek DS9, and it still is. But even though I have issues with how both those shows went, I don't know that I would have tried to change anything.

Also the X-Files answer was mostly so that I could have worked with a young Vince Gilligan and then went on to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and then I could be retired by now! (And as a writer on those last two shows, I would have given the female characters more interesting things to do!)

Trying out [personal profile] squidgiepdx's June Something posting challenge!

Day 1: What show or movie original cast would you like to see reunite for an update - where the intervening time has passed and we're getting a view of where they are now along with glimpses on how they got there?

It would be really nice if Mindhunter got a third season. :crossed-arms-pouting-emoji: If it ever ended up being revisited ten years from now, we can just have them in the '90s, and it would be just as good. Ugh! Such potential we had, once.

Day 2: What show or movie would you like rebooted? Same premise and storylines, but all new actors, showrunners, writers, technology, and social awareness?

Firefly.

For most people, this would probably be the answer to Day 1, but I think reimagined Firefly with actual cultural competency, Chinese Tams, and a little more self-awareness about what it's doing with both the manifest destiny AND hooker with a heart of gold stuff would be CHEF'S KISS.

Day 3: What question would you like to see in The June Something? (We'll steal select a couple for the last two days.)

What fanfic trope do you think deserves way more love than it gets?

2. Something you did or accomplished this week

I planted my garden, since I thought the "first frost" was finally passed. But it's going to be below freezing tonight so I might have to try again :(

3. An interesting piece of media / link / song / etc. that you discovered or enjoyed this week

Cardinal, the Canadian detective series, is actually REALLY good! My bar for Canadian TV is pretty low, so like, idk, take that with a grain of salt, lol, but if you like broody sad detectives who can't keep their family together (hellooooo Bill Tench) then you might just like Cardinal!

Also, I love winter settings for broody detective stories, like Fargo. Nothing like a sad tortured detective clomping around in big old ugly boots.

Season One, at least, is excellent. There are some VERY objectifying shots of the twinky male victim that are kind of refreshing-- it's the kind of shots you usually see taken of female victims, and sometimes its just nice to have the opposite. But they are also so objectifying that it's just too much and kind of unsettling. Like, who is this image FOR?? As someone who enjoys objectifying the male form a lot, I found it pretty gratuitous. It wasn't torture porn, but it definitely evoked the memory of torture porn, so that was like hmm :-/

Anyway, the other seasons don't have that kind of thing going on, but the stories aren't quite as gripping and the female detective isn't as interesting as she is in season one. In any case, I'd say give it a shot!

I’ve always really enjoyed the What Up With That sketches, which have been on SNL for like ten years, and are always almost exactly the same. To me, they are always 100% delightful.

This What Up With That AT HOME sketch is, in my opinion, the first great piece of art to come out of the pandemic. The already brilliant format of the sketch has been ABSOLUTELY ELEVATED by the constrains of quarantine. Just. Every part of it is pure absurd comedy gold. The Zoom windows scrolling around. The graphics somehow being OUTSIDE the Zoom windows. The jumpsuit guy jumping BETWEEN Zoom windows??? I am dead, this sketch has killed me.
